Navy Chow
Always the subject of conversation. Generally not bad given the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables etc.
Here's a recipe that will take you back to those mornings when the galley had no competition.
The famous S.O.S.
In case you guys forgot what S.O.S. is, I thought I would pass the recipe on as follows:
3 pounds lean ground beef, pref. 90% fat free or better.
1 cup chopped onions
3/4 cup flour
2 ea. 28oz. cans crushed tomatoes
1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground mace or if not found, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon nutmeg but mace is better
1 teaspoon salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Lightly coat a large pot with spray type olive oil.
Braise beef with onion over medium high heat.
Sprinkle flour over the ground beef and continue cook until flour is absorbed.
Add tomatoes, spices and water if needed. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes until mixture thickens.
Serve over hot toast or biscuits as preferred.
Yield: 15 to 20 servings.
